Why Eisenhower Therapy Services?

Whether you are recovering from an injury or ailment, or learning how to prevent injury, Eisenhower Medical Center’s Therapy Services are designed to maximize your functional abilities and facilitate rapid independence and return to normal activity. Our therapists work with a variety of conditions and age groups, from infants to the elderly. They address diminished function as a result of pain, lack of mobility, balance disturbances, swelling, loss of motion and loss of communication.

Conditions commonly treated include, but are not limited to:

Balance disorders: Dizziness, vertigo, gait abnormality, disequilibrium.

Orthopedic conditions: Back and neck pain, osteoporosis, sprains and strains, hand injuries, fractures, dislocations, amputations and pre- and post-surgical conditions.

Neurological conditions: Stroke, brain injury, Parkinson’s disease, cerebral palsy, developmental delays, peripheral nerve damage and multiple sclerosis.

Skin conditions: Burns, wounds, connective tissue/ skin disorders, post-surgical sites and diabetic ulcers.

Arthritic conditions: Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Workplace injuries: Carpal tunnel syndrome, cumulative trauma and other conditions.

Sports injuries: Overuse injuries and trauma caused by participation in professional and recreational sports.

Women’s health issues: Urinary and fecal incontinence, pelvic pain, prenatal and postpartum dysfunction, osteoporosis and fibromyalgia.

Lymphatic conditions: Excessive accumulation of lymph due to injury, surgery or dysfunction of the lymph system.

Communicative disorders: Neurological disorders, developmental speech and language delays, voice disorders, laryngectomy and alternative methods of communication.

Eisenhower Therapy Services Team

Eisenhower Therapy Services utilizes a teamwork approach to provide you with the best possible care and outcome. Depending upon the patient’s condition and needs, an individualized care plan will be developed which will include care provided by some or all of the following therapy professionals:

Physical Therapist: Evaluates and designs a program to minimize pain, impairments and functional limitations; promotes fitness, health, return to work and recreation, as well as injury prevention, through education, job site analysis and treatment interventions.

Occupational Therapist: Evaluates, designs and administers a program focused on improving independence in self care, activities of daily living, return to work or recreation and injury prevention through education, job site analysis and treatment interventions.

Speech Therapist: Evaluates and designs a program to facilitate the ability tocommunicate thoughts, wants and feelings.

Support Staff: Physical or Occupational Therapist Assistants, Aides, and office staff all work collaboratively to ensure the maximum outcome of the program.

Physician: Prescribes, authorizes and reviews care.

The Patient: The most critical part of the therapy process. Input toward therapy goals and commitment to the patient’s role in the healing process are among the most crucial components toward success.

Treatment Procedures/Interventions

Clinicians will use a variety of treatment procedures as part of the program. These may include:

Therapeutic exercise (including aerobic conditioning) designed to stretch tight muscles, strengthen weak ones, or enhance postural stability.

Manual therapy designed to improve your joint and soft tissue mobility and enhance flexibility.

Gait/balance/mobility training to enhance the ability to walk in your home or community.

Aquatic exercise, which takes advantage of the properties of water to strengthen and stretch muscles and improve cardiovascular function.

Electrical stimulation to reduce inflammation and pain and increase strength.

Balance/vestibular rehabilitation including dynamic platform training to improve balance and reduce dizziness.

Electromyography (EMG) biofeedback , visual/ auditory/computerized muscle re-education for improving bowel/bladder control and muscle relaxation.

Ultrasound, high frequency sound waves which provide deep heating to tissue, decreasing pain and inflammation and increasing circulation.

Thermal agents (heat/cold), usually applied before or after other procedures, to reduce pain and inflammation and improve the effectiveness of the other procedures.

Traction, which aids in pain relief through a measurable pull or stress to the injured tissue.

Iontophoresis, a process by which pain medication is driven into the area of treatment by electrical transference.

Phonophoresis, another process by which medication is delivered directly into theproblem area using ultrasound.

Manual lymph drainage/decongestive therapy , including manual massage, bandaging and consideration of pressure garment application.

Fabrication and application of assistive, adaptive,supportive or protective devices such as splints, braces, supports, etc.

Training in activities of daily living, including energy conservation, joint protection and adaptive equipment to facilitate independence.

Neuromuscular re-education/sensory integration to improve coordination and function.

Wound care for promoting the healing of wounds.

Speech articulation and cognitive retraining to facilitate communication skills.

Voice therapy (including re-education) to improve vocal quality.

Oral motor exercise/diet texture modification for swallowing problems.

Patient education, the most important part of the program, which may include home exercise, posture, movement, wound care and work station modification. This education may also include family members and other caregivers.
