  • Barry Hackshaw, MD, is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease and Interventional Cardiology, and is President of Eisenhower Desert Cardiology Center, the largest single specialty cardiology group in the Coachella Valley.

Dr. Hackshaw attended Bowman Gray School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

He completed his internship, residency and fellowship at North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. After completing his fellowship, Dr. Hackshaw was an associate professor of medicine/cardiology at Bowman Gray School of Medicine and Associate Chief of Staff at the medical center.

“During my academic career, I was able to participate in many of the great advances in cardiology,” says Dr. Hackshaw. “I was on ground floor in the field of angioplasty and stenting, and I did my first procedures in 1981. I then helped develop and coordinate the heart transplant program at the medical center, resulting in the first heart transplant in 1986. While at the medical center, my research activities involved treatment of heart failure, and differentiating between cardiac and esophageal sources of chest pain. I also participated in several early studies of ace-inhibitors for heart failure.”

“The number one goal in cardiology is preventing heart attack and premature death from hardening of the arteries,” notes Dr. Hackshaw. “The first step in preventing coronary artery disease is lifestyle management — that means proper dietary habits, weight control and appropriate exercise. We have a very motivated population in the desert compared to the rest of the country. Our patients lead active lifestyles, their dietary habits are excellent and they tend to follow directions and recommendations.”

Dr. Hackshaw likes to practice what he preaches. “I’ve incorporated physical activity and a better diet into my own lifestyle,” says Dr. Hackshaw. “I play tennis, and I’m more physically active than I was even five years ago. I’m also more calorie conscious and I’m aware of my risk factors. In trying to prevent heart disease, I think it’s important for every individual to eat right, exercise and maintain an appropriate weight. But equally important is a personal understanding of one’s own cholesterol numbers, as well as other potential cardiac risk factors.”
