Eisenhower Hosts Sixth Annual Critical Care Conference

Eisenhower Medical Center held its sixth annual Critical Care conference at the Annenberg Center for Health Sciences at Eisenhower on Saturday, April 24, 2010. The annual conference focuses on issues related to the care of critically-ill patients, and is designed to assist nurses, physicians, and other health professionals in providing quality care through the examination of best practices.

This year’s conference featured a number of topics, including risk factors and treatments for infections in critical care, the impact of H1N1 and current treatments, the future of Information Technology in the intensive care unit, and recognizing and treating sepsis. In addition to the course curriculum, conference attendees were able to visit special exhibits by a number of organizations in the health care industry.More than 225 medical professionals attended.

The chair for this year’s conference was Eisenhower’s Chair of Medicine Shahriyar Tavakoli, MD, FCCP, who also serves as the Director of Critical Care Services at Eisenhower. Matthew Brenner, MD, Professor of Medicine and Chief of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of California, Irvine, moderated the conference.

A number of the country’s most experienced medical professionals served as faculty members for the conference. Speakers included Joshua Bloomstone, MD, of Valley Anesthesiology Consultants in Phoenix, Arizona; Timothy Girard, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine in the division of Allergy, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine; Dennis G.Maki, MD, Ovid O.Meyer Professor of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin; Anthony Suffredini, MD, Associate Chief of the Critical Care Medicine Department at the National Institutes of Health; and Andrew Mellin, MD, MBA, Vice President, Predictive Care, McKesson.
