Eisenhower Lucy Curci Cancer Center Recognized

Eisenhower Lucy Curci Cancer Center recently earned a full Three-Year Approval with Commendation from the American College of Surgeons (ACoS) Commission on Cancer (CoC). The highest level of accreditation given, the approval is awarded to cancer centers that comply with all CoC standards and receive a Commendation rating for one or more of the eligible standards that represent the full scope of the cancer program. Eisenhower Lucy Curci Cancer Center received Commendations for nine standards, more than any other cancer facility in the Coachella Valley.

In receiving this level of accreditation, Eisenhower Lucy Curci Cancer Center was eligible for evaluation for an additional award—the CoC Outstanding Achievement Award. Eisenhower Lucy Curci Cancer Center was the only facility in the state of California and one of only 31 in the United States granted the Outstanding Achievement Award.

The core function of the CoC includes setting standards for quality, multidisciplinary cancer patient care; surveying facilities to evaluate compliance with the 36 CoC high patient care standards; collecting quality data from approved facilities; and using the data to develop effective educational interventions to improve cancer care outcomes at the national, state and local levels.

Receiving care at a CoC-approved cancer program ensures: Comprehensive care, including a range of state-of-the-art services and equipment A multi-specialty team approach to coordinate the best treatment options Information about ongoing clinical trials and new treatment options Access to cancer-related information, education and support A cancer registry that collects data on cancer types, stages and treatment results and offers lifelong patient follow-up Ongoing monitoring and improvement of care Quality care close to home

EISENHOWER LUCY CURCI CANCER CENTER

Since its opening in February 2004, the Eisenhower Lucy Curci Cancer Center has stood apart from other cancer care providers. It was the first in the world to offer on-site IsoStrand™ seed stranding with cesium combined with radiation therapy for prostate cancer treatment at the Arnold Palmer Prostate Center. The Eisenhower Schnitzer/Novack Breast Center was the first and only in California to obtain Breast-Specific Gamma Imaging technology, a state-of- the-art advanced screening tool for breast cancer detection. Eisenhower Lucy Curci Cancer Center was also the first to offer Stereotactic Radiosurgery, three-dimensional, computer-guided radiation that aims highly focused beams for radiation directly into a tumor. Eisenhower Lucy Curci Cancer Center’s BIGHORN Radiation Oncology Center also was the first in the Coachella Valley to offer the MammoSite™ Radiation Therapy System for breast cancer, a high-dose technology that delivers radiation treatment in five days versus six to seven weeks. In addition, the Center is a participant in the International Early Lung Cancer Action Project (I-ELCAP), a seminal study detecting lung cancer in which only four facilities in California are participating.
