Senator Barbara Boxer Returns with a $500,000 Gift

On the warm, clear afternoon of January 21, 2006, Senator Barbara Boxer visited the Eisenhower Lucy Curci Cancer Center to talk about securing $500,000 in funding for the Arnold Palmer Prostate Center. Two years earlier, Boxer had visited Eisenhower and was told of the need for funding for new technologies. Boxer promised to do something about it and in less than a year, she delivered. “I’m dedicated to doing all that I can do. . .I applaud the Arnold Palmer Prostate Center’s innovative methods for treating prostate cancer.”

Senator Boxer was given a tour of the cancer facility by John Stevenson, MD, Medical Director of the Arnold Palmer Prostate Center. They were joined by Eisenhower Medical Center’s G. Aubrey Serfling, President and Chief Executive Officer, Michael D. Landes, President, Eisenhower Medical Center Foundation, Louise White, Chief Nursing Officer, and Rancho Mirage Mayor Alan Seman.

Senator Boxer’s funding supports one of the new technologies available at the Eisenhower Lucy Curci Cancer Center — stereotactic (X-ray guided) radiosurgery — which gives patients new options for treatment with less pain, fewer risks and shorter recovery time by delivering a powerful, precise dose of radiation to a tumor or lesion without an incision. Eisenhower was the first center to bring this advanced new technology to the Coachella Valley.
