Cancer Transitions: Moving Beyond Treatment

Eisenhower Receives Grant From The Lance Armstrong Foundation and The Wellness Community

The Eisenhower Lucy Curci Cancer Center has been awarded a grant from The Wellness Community and The Lance Armstrong Foundation to present a comprehensive six-week cancer survivorship program. Eisenhower is one of only 20 organizations nationwide to receive this prestigious grant, and one of only two in Southern California.

The survivorship program will be held quarterly, and will complement the existing comprehensive services that Eisenhower already offers. Limited to 25 participants, the unique program includes six sessions that run for consecutive weeks, and a follow-up session four weeks after the core program ends.

The survivorship program, which is the first of its kind in the Coachella Valley, will provide education and support programs focused on medical issues, exercise, nutrition, and the emotional needs that cancer survivors often face when they finish treatment. Participants will hear presentations on managing long-term medical issues, have group discussions around the emotional and social hurdles they face in the transition period after cancer treatment, follow a simple exercise program led by a trainer, and learn nutrition information and tips following treatment.

The Eisenhower Lucy Curci Cancer Center events are being held as part of a nationwide pilot program for cancer survivors called Cancer Transitions: Moving Beyond Treatment, which was developed by The Wellness Community and The Lance Armstrong Foundation. The Wellness Community and the Armstrong Foundation hope to make the program available in communities throughout the country, gleaning valuable information from model programs such as Eisenhower’s.

Founded in 1997 by cancer survivor and champion cyclist Lance Armstrong, The Lance Armstrong Foundation focuses on cancer prevention, access to screening and care, improving the quality of life of cancer survivors and investment in research. Established in California in 1982, The Wellness Community is an international non-profit organization dedicated to providing free support, education and hope to people with cancer and their loved ones.
