It is my pleasure to highlight two exceptionally vital forces in our community and at Eisenhower Medical Center — Jim and Jackie Lee Houston. In this issue of Healthy Living, the Houstons candidly discuss life, the inspiration that guides their extraordinary philanthropy, and their experiences in health care. Jackie Lee Houston talks frankly about her chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, as well as her treatments at the Eisenhower Lucy Curci Cancer Center.
Also, in January, Senator Barbara Boxer returned to Eisenhower Medical Center bearing gifts…$500,000 in funding for Eisenhower’s Arnold Palmer Prostate Center. In “What’s New,” Senator Boxer applauds the Arnold Palmer Prostate Center’s cutting edge technologies, directing this appropriation toward Stereotactic Radiosurgery. Eisenhower Medical Center was the first center to bring this advanced new technology to the Coachella Valley.
Healthy Living also highlights an extremely prevalent problem affecting more than 85 million Americans — insomnia. Increasingly common in the senior population, insomnia can be highly debilitating, even dangerous. The good news, however, is that help is available. Eisenhower’s Philip Shaver, MD, moderates an in-depth exploration of insomnia, including its causes, prevention and treatment, with Eisenhower neurologist Reza Nazemi, MD, and pulmonologist, Mohammad Mojarad, MD.
In this issue’s “Feature,” we focus on Eisenhower’s Sleep Disorder Center where chronic sleep problems can be diagnosed and treated. Specialized physicians and staff are trained to evaluate a myriad of clinical data gathered in just one overnight visit. With Eisenhower’s Sleep Disorder Center, a good night’s sleep really is possible.
Reaching for the stars has always been Eisenhower’s hallmark. On March 22, Reaching for the Stars — a black-tie gala featuring Vanessa Williams — will celebrate 35 years of Eisenhower Medical Center’s excellence in health care. Join us at the beautiful J.W. Marriott’s Desert Springs Resort and Spa for a truly stellar evening. Celebrate our 35 years of healing in the Coachella Valley and the wonderful leaders and donors who support Eisenhower Medical Center, Campaign Eisenhower, and the future health of our community. Reaching for the Stars is found in Healthy Living’s “What’s New” section.
Please remember, Healthy Living is here to help you lead a vital and active life. If there is a topic that you would like to know more about, please let us know.
Yours in good health,
G. Aubrey Serfling President and Chief Executive Officer Eisenhower Medical Center
