Eisenhower Cardiovascular Surgeon At Atrial Fibrillation Summit

Eisenhower Cardiovascular Surgeon S. N. Mitruka, MD, was one of a select group invited to participate in the Atrial Fibrillation Leaders’ Summit in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in early December. The summit included cardiac surgeons and electrophysiologists from 15 medical institutions, including the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, who gathered to explore the future of atrial fibrillation (A-Fib) treatment.

A-Fib is the most common form of arrhythmia, an irregularity in the normal rhythm of the heartbeat. According to the American Heart Association, approximately 2.2 million people in the United States suffer from A-Fib. The condition carries serious consequences, including a fivefold increase in the risk of stroke.

Dr. Mitruka was one of the first physicians, and still is one of only a few in California, qualified to teach the MAZE procedure, a revolutionary, new minimally-invasive technique that yields a high success rate in correcting atrial fibrillation.
