About Dr. Peter Attia
Peter Attia, M.D. has been a physician, teacher, McKinsey & Company consultant, and a surgeon at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he was the recipient of several prestigious awards, including Resident of the Year. With vast experiences in the healthcare industry, he has dedicated himself to self-experimentation, discovering new methods for better nutrition in the public sphere. This knowledge led Attia to become the president and co-founder of the Nutrition Science Initiative (NuSI), a California-based nonprofit dedicated to reducing the individual, social, and economic costs associated with obesity-related diseases. He went on to receive the 2012/2013 French-American Foundation Young Leader's Fellowship, which recognizes the most promising leaders in the United States and France under the age of 40.
Attia earned his M.D. from Stanford University and holds a B.Sc. in mechanical engineering and applied mathematics from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, where he also taught and helped design the calculus curriculum.
Much of Attia's inspiration comes from the two years he spent at the National Institutes of Health as a surgical oncology fellow at the National Cancer Institute under the mentorship of Dr. Steve Rosenberg. Here, his research focused on the role of regulatory T cells in cancer regression and other immune-based therapies for cancer.
Through different personal experiences during his residency, Attia became frustrated with certain aspects of medicine and healthcare. Following his passion, he decided to work on solving different healthcare problems by joining the consulting firm McKinsey & Company, one of the most stimulating experiences of his life.
Peter Attia is devoted to using scientific inquiry to test assumptions about the relationship between nutrition, obesity, and diabetes. This passion comes through in his speeches and in his popular blog Eating Academy, which charts his own adventures in nutrition and examines scientific evidence surrounding food, weight loss, and disease risk.
