“Orthopedists are more than technicians. I stay involved with my patients through the recovery process.”
Robert C. Sullivan, M.D. is a fellowship-trained, board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in adult joint replacement surgery and pediatric orthopedics. He came to Desert Orthopedic Center in April 1996 from private practice in Palm Springs.
A native of Chicago, IL, Dr. Sullivan received his fellowship training in orthopedic surgery from Sofield-Seabury Traveling Fellowship, Loyola University, Chicago. He earned his Medical Degree from Loyola University, Chicago, and served his orthopedic surgery residency at Loyola-Shriners Hospital, Chicago and his internship at Cook County Hospital, also in Chicago.
No stranger to medicine, Dr. Sullivan comes from a family of physicians. His father, uncle, two cousins, brother and one of his sons are also doctors.
“I have always found working with children and helping them lead active lives to be particularly enjoyable,” comments Dr. Sullivan. The biggest challenge in pediatric orthopedics, he notes, is decision-making. “If a child has an abnormal gait there may be many reasons. It takes careful examination and thought to determine the best solution.”
Dr. Sullivan is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons.
He maintains a special interest in congenital disorders such as cerebral palsy and has received awards for his contributions in biomedical engineering. He also remains Emeritus Staff at Shriners Children’s Hospital where he returns for several weeks during the summer to teach residents.
